The Best of CES 2025 HiFi: The Force Awakens: Onkyo Returns with the Icon Series
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 showcased countless cutting-edge gadgets and groundbreaking technologies, but it was a surprise name from the past that stole the HiFi spotlight: Onkyo. Once a legendary player in the audio industry, Onkyo’s remarkable comeback at CES has become one of the most talked-about narratives of the year.
The Legacy of Onkyo & Current Ownership (There’s been a lot going on)
Founded in 1946, Onkyo built its reputation on delivering high-quality audio components and became synonymous with premium sound. The brand thrived for decades, particularly during the golden era of home theater systems, when its AV receivers and amplifiers were a staple for audiophiles and casual enthusiasts alike. However, the rise of wireless audio and streaming solutions, coupled with financial missteps, led the company into significant decline. By May 2022, Onkyo filed for bankruptcy.
The brand was saved through a joint venture between Sharp Corporation and Premium Audio Company (PAC), a subsidiary of Voxx International. This partnership acquired the Onkyo and Integra brands, along with all intellectual property, and assumed responsibility for product development, engineering, and distribution. Recently, the landscape shifted further when Gentex Corporation acquired Voxx International, bringing Onkyo, Klipsch, and Integra under its umbrella. Known for its expertise in automotive electronics, Gentex’s entry into consumer audio promises new resources and opportunities for Onkyo’s growth.
Under Gentex’s ownership, Onkyo has doubled down on its commitment to innovation. The company established a new research and development facility in Japan and announced a relaunch strategy focused on cutting-edge products, including active speakers and amplifiers, unveiled at CES 2025.
The HIFI Star of CES 2025: Onkyo’s Icon Series
Aimed squarely at audiophiles, Onkyo’s Icon Series is designed to “deliver powerful, pure sound through exquisitely designed modern chassis that house advanced technologies for superior audio performance,” according to a CES 2025 press release. The Icon Series includes:
- Icon P-80 Network Pre-Amplifier: A Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capable network preamplifier featuring Dirac Live Room Correction, Onkyo’s new Dynamic Intermodulation Distortion Reduction Circuitry (DIDRC), and a Premium Stereo DAC AK4452. It supports AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Roon Ready, and major streaming services like Spotify, Tidal, and Amazon Music.
- Icon M-80 Power Amplifier: A Symmetrical Class AB amplifier that delivers 200 watts per channel into 4-ohm speakers or 150 watts into 8-ohm speakers. It features a fan-less design with an aluminum heat sink and retro VU meters that hark back to classic HiFi aesthetics.
- Icon A-50 Network Integrated Amplifier: This integrated amplifier combines a Symmetrical Class AB design with Dirac Live Room Correction and the same Premium Stereo DAC AK4452. It supports HDMI ARC, multiple input options, and streaming via AirPlay 2, Google Cast, and Roon Ready.
The Icon Series’ blend of vintage design elements, such as glowing VU meters, with cutting-edge audio technology underscores Onkyo’s commitment to bridging its storied past with the demands of modern audiophiles.
Why Onkyo’s Comeback Matters
Onkyo’s resurgence is arguably the most significant development in the HiFi world at CES 2025. It’s not just a story of technological innovation but also one of redemption. The Icon Series symbolizes a renewed commitment to excellence in an era when traditional audio brands often struggle to compete with tech giants like Apple and Sonos. Onkyo’s comeback represents hope for an industry that thrives on passion, heritage, and craftsmanship.
Other Highlights at CES 2025 (More “Icons”)
While Onkyo stole the HiFi show, another standout product caught our attention: Bluesound’s New Node Icon: Bluesound has launched the NODE ICON, a flagship wireless music streamer priced at $1,399, featuring a cutting-edge Dual-Mono DAC design with two ESS SABRE® ES9039Q2M DACs. The device boasts a 5″ full-color display, sleek aluminum chassis, and supports high-resolution audio streaming. Key features include MQA Labs’ QRONO d2a processing technology, THX AAA headphone amplifier technology, and seamless integration with the BluOS multi-room ecosystem.
Bluesound was the clear winner in the space, however; Wiim has quickly become a formidable opponent i the space offering similar performance and features with tremendous value, so it will be interesting to see how this category evolves. Its also interesting to note that Bluesound has now been taking a few design cues from the emerging Chinese brand which says a lot. Wiim has already had their ultra on the market for nearly a rear with a similar touchscreen display. Let the mid-fi streaming wars continue! Onkyo’s CES success sets the stage for an exciting 2025. With renewed financial stability, a clear vision, and products that resonate with both nostalgic audiophiles and modern tech enthusiasts, the company has positioned itself for a bold new chapter. If the Icon Series is any indication, Onkyo is not just surviving—it’s thriving.
For those of us who have missed the brand’s presence in recent years, it’s thrilling to see Onkyo reclaim its place at the forefront of HiFi innovation. Welcome back, Onkyo. We’ve been waiting.
